[Miami, Florida – August 27, 2008] On July 12, 2008, OCA – South Florida Chapter and United Chinese Association of Florida successfully co-hosted the second Miss Florida Asia Pageant at the North Miami Beach Performing Arts Theater, drawing over 600 attendees to witness the crowning of Miss Florida Asia.

This year, eight contestants represented six countries. They are Kayla Kimberly Chin Nuke [China], Gloria Li Ya Chow [China], Tia Bao Tran Vo [Vietnam], Kimia Mavon [Iran], Nancy Van Anh Nguyen [Vietnam], Marie Eilis Tessa V. [Philippines], May Shir Igawa [Japan/Israel], and Mimi Goon [China].

The categories were Miss Florida Asia, First Princess, Second Princess, and awards of Miss Photogenic, Miss Congeniality, Miss Talent, Best National Costume, Best Swimsuit and Best Evening Gown.

The six distinguished pageant judges were the Honorable Dorothy “Dottie” Johnson — Vice Mayor of City of Opa-Locka, Dr. Antonio Wong — Chinese-American family practice physician, Dr. John Chang — Korean-American surgeon, Quan Anh Cao — Vietnamese-American English professor of Palm Beach Community College, Al Otero — Latino American Executive Director of Broward County Chamber of Commerce, and Edmond Chun-Hon Tse – Controller for Production (East) of Fairchild Media Group – who traveled from Toronto, Canada, to join us.

The pageant auditors were Tony Mok – CPA and Susan Xu – Taxation MBA – who assessed all scores for accuracy and legitimacy.

The Honorable Raymond Marin — Mayor of City of North Miami Beach – presented the proclamation of Miss Florida Asia 2008 to Winnie Tang, Producer of Miss Florida Asia. Mayor Marin emphasized that the City of North Miami Beach embraces diversity and promotes multicultural programs. He wishes that the Miss Florida Asia to be held in the City every year.

Ronin Taiko started off the Pageant with the powerful Japanese drumming. During the pageant, rising stars from the Indian community – Ashlee and Hana Madhukar sang “I am alive” and “I will survive” and Indian classical dance by Jyouthy Thomas. Chinese vocalist Pablo Kee sang “China Dream” in Chinese and “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina”. The Ife-Ile Afro-Cuban Music and Dance group has performed a colorful “Havana Carnival”.

After a month-long intensive training in public speech, skin care, modeling walk and dancing. Contestants were judged for post-Pageant Interview (25%), National Costume (10%), Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit (15%), Talent (25%), Evening Gown (20%) and On-Stage questions (5%).

The Pageant officially began on Thursday evening (July 10) when the judging panel interviewed each contestant individually to score the post-Pageant Interview.

On Saturday evening, contestants welcomed the audience with an opening dance — “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”. After showing their fun and energetic side, they quickly changed into their respective National Costumes to start the Self-Introduction phase and began the On-Stage competition. All contestants are currently attending college and/or senior high school; the majority of them have plans in various medicine fields as career goals.

During the Talent competition segment, Kayla performed a colorful belly dance, Gloria a traditional Chinese ribbon dance, and Tia a mixer of Tango and Cha Cha with a partner. Kimia performed a solo act from musical. Nancy played “Memory” on the piano with accompanied by an electric guitar, Tessa performed a modern dance, May an Israeli-style belly dance and Mimi choreographed her own Chinese ballet. Celebrates Asian Cultures with Beauty 

[Miami, Florida - July 3, 2008] On June 29, OCA – South Florida Chapter and United Chinese Association of Florida hosted the second annual press conference at NANAY Community Center. The Miss Florida Asia 2008 pageant will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2008, at 6:30 pmat North Miami Beach Performing Arts Theater – 17011 NE 19 Street, North Miami Beach, FL 33162.

This year, the contestants represent China, Iran, Japan, Philippines and Vietnam.

The objective of the Pageant is to further the cooperation, understanding and friendship among Asian American communities and mainstream community-at-large,” said Winnie Tang, Producer of Miss Florida Asia. “To honor and celebrate their intelligence, heritage and culture, the winners of Miss Florida Asia can see and be seen in positive and inspiring roles. They are our future leaders so they will continue to support community projects and civil welfare activities.”

“The inaugural Pageant was a great success,” Ms. Tang continued.  “We have received positive feedbacks and compliments on the professionalism of our Judge Panel from different professions and political areas. In order to maximize this year’s pageant professionalism, we have six image and cosmetic consultants working with the contestants to provide image, public speaking and dance training so the contestants will shine and demonstrate their talent and intelligence.”

All 2008 contestants are between the ages of 17-25 and reside in the state of Florida. Most importantly, they all possess excellent moral and conduct.

Coincidentally, the majority of this year’s contestants plan to enter the medical fields as their future career goals.

At the press conference, the following contestants were introduced.

Gloria Li Ya Chow graduated from University of Miami and will continue her optometry studies at University of California – Berkeley College of Optometry. Miss Chow was born in Fort Lauderdale. Her parents originally came from Canton, China. She was the president of University of Miami – Asian American Student Association. She would like to take this opportunity to be active in community service so she may use this experience to provide services to the community service, especially the minority community, after graduation.

Kayla Kimberly Chin-Nuke is Jamaican-Chinese born in Miami. Miss Chin-Nuke majors in Biology and Psychology at University of Miami and would like to become an Orthodontist. Raised by her mother primary in the Jamaican community, she would like to take this opportunity to learn more about her father’s Chinese cultural and heritage. 

Marie Ellis Tessa V. Onia represents the Philippines.  Miss Onia and her family moved to Miami two years ago.  She is a sophomore of Florida International University’s Pharmacy program. She would like to take this opportunity to learn more about the Asian American community and be more active in community projects.

Miss Florida Asia 2008 is support by many business, organizations and friends. State Farm Insurance, Doctors Plus Medical Center and Guylaine Lanctet Cliniques Vein Institute continue their support of the Miss Florida Asia scholarship funds for a second year. NANAY Inc. provides its NANAY Community Center for all training and practice sessions and Fashion Village provides all dance costumes.  The raising stars Ashlee and Hana Madhukar will be performing from the Indian community at the Pageant.

The Search is On for Miss Florida Asia 2008

[Miami, FloridaApril 2, 2008]  OCA – South Florida Chapter and United Chinese Association of Florida announced today it is now accepting applications for the Second Annual Miss Florida Asia Pageant 2008.  

The pageant is open to our young Asian ladies between the ages of 17 – 25 years old, single, never married, nor given birth to a child; must be at least 25% of Asian origin; and must reside in the state of Florida for at least 6 months as of the date of 2008 Pageant. 

The pageant gives young women a vehicle to further their personal and professional goals, while providing a forum in which they can express their talents, intelligence and opinions on culture, politics and the community.  Selected delegates will undergo weeks of intensive training in a self development workshop which includes: public speaking, make up application, poise & stance, stage presentation and wardrobe coordination. 

Miss Florida Asia 2008 will make appearance at fundraisers, festivals and events as well as the radio talk shows, to promote Asian American community. 

The pageant which will be holding its second annual in July for its spectacular stage and cultural shows. The delegates will participate in five categories: preliminary interview, national costume, talent performance, swimsuit fitness, and evening gown.  Special awards will be awarded in the various categories Community Service, Miss Congeniality, Miss Photogenic, Audience’s Choice, National Costume and Performing Arts.   

The winner will have the honor of being crowned as the Queen of Miss Florida Asia 2008 with a $1,500 Scholarship award and prizes.  In addition to prizes, the First Princess will be awarded $1,000 Scholarship and $500 Scholarship for the Second Princess.

Xiaozhen You crowned as the first Miss Florida Asia
[Miami, Florida - July 31, 2007] Last Saturday, July 21, 2007, OCA – South Florida Chapter and United Chinese Association of Florida successfully co-hosted the first Miss Florida Asia Pageant at the North Miami Beach Performing Arts Theater, drawing over 500 attendees to witness the crowning of Miss Florida Asia.
 
Despite two contestants having to withdraw prior to the contest due to angle injury and final exams, seven contestants competed at the first Miss Florida Asia to celebrate Asian culture with beauty.  They are Marisa Moolsiri [Thailand], Hong-Thuy Nguyen [Vietnam], Ching-Ya (Julia) Ni [Taiwan], Bao-Ying (Amy) Wang [China], Yueting (Jade) Wu [China], Dongfei (Rita) Shang [China] and Xiaozhen You [China].
 

The categories were Miss Florida Asia, 1st Princess, 2nd Princess, and awards of Miss Photogenic, Miss Congeniality, Miss Talent, the best National Costume, Best Swimsuit and Best Evening Gown.
 

The Mistresses of Ceremony for the first Miss Florida Asia are Mee Pang and Indra Bosko.  They both are outstanding professional woman and very active in the community services.
 

The six distinguished pageant judges were the Honorable Ricardo Allicock – Counsel General of Jamaica Consulate in Miami, Korean-American surgeon Dr. John Chang, Chinese-American family practice physician Dr. Antonio Wong, Vietnamese-American Quan Anh Cao – English professor of Palm Beach Community College, Chinese-American global financial advisor Al Yee – Vice President of OCA – Phoenix Chapter and Albert Posillico – Executive Director of Miss Latina International.
 

The pageant auditors were Tony Mok – CPA and Susan Xu – Taxation MBA. who assessed all scores for accuracy and legitimacy.
 

The Anta Hung Gar Defense & Fitness Academy kicked off the Pageant with the traditional Lion Dance.  During the pageant, Lena Ung from Tampa sang three songs in Cantonese, Vietnamese and English, and Miami Temptation Tees performed three Motown hits:  “Get Ready”, “I Can’t Get Next To You” and “My Girl”.
 

The Contestants also scored points for post-Pageant Interview (25%), National Costume (10%), Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit (15%), Talent (25%), Evening Gown (20%) and On-Stage questions (5%).
 

The Pageant officially began on Friday evening (July 20) when the judging panel interviewed each contestant individually to score the Post-Pageant Interview.
 

The contestants welcomed the audience with a modern Chinese group dance.  The on-stage contest began with National Costume and Self-Introduction by each contestant.  All contestants are currently attending college and/or senior high school.  Thai-American Marisa Moolsiri received a volley ball scholarship and is currently enrolled at the University of Central Florida (UCF) majoring in Marketing in Orlando.  Ms. Nguyen was born in Vietnam and is a senior at Florida International University (FIU) majoring in Marketing and International Business.  Ms. Wang graduated with a Master Degree in Civil Engineering at FIU.  Ms. Ni is senior at Palmetto Senior High.  Ms. Wu is a senior at Killian Senior High.  Ms. Shang is majoring in Mathematics at UCF, and Ms. You is in her second year of a Ph.D. program in Biomedical Engineering at FIU.
 

After all competitions, the results are Ms Nguyen won the best National Costume with her beautiful and elegant Vietnamese outfit, Ms. You won the Best Swimsuit & Physical Fitness, Ms. Shang is Miss Photogenic and won the best Evening Gown.  Ms. Wu won Miss Talent with her outstanding  traditional Chinese music performance with her Guzheng.
 

Ms. Nguyen, the 2nd Princess was crowned by Diana Morejon [Miss Teen Latina International]; 1st Princess Ms. Wu and was crowned by Esther Dollar [Miss Latina International US]. Ms. You won the Miss Florida Asia title and was crowned by Vivian Perez [Miss Latina International 2006].
 
Along with the title, the winners received scholarship prizes of $1,500, $1,000 and $500, respectively partially sponsored by State Farm.  In addition, they received tickets to the 12 Girls Band World Tour from Broward Center for the Performing Arts.  Ms. Angela Posillico, President of Miss Latina International Pageant System, offered an invitation to Miss Florida Asia to participate at its upcoming Miss Latina International Pageant in November.
